Question: Gianna and Laura spent $900 at the gym last year. If Gianna spent half as much as Laura did, how much did Gianna spend at the gym?

Answer:

Step 1: First, we draw 1 box to represent the amount Gianna spent and 2 boxes to represent the amount Laura spent.

Step 2: Since both of them spent a total of $900, we draw a bracket to the right to show this amount. We also can use a question mark to denote the amount spent by Gianna.

From the model,

3 units ---------- $900

1 unit ---------- $900 / 3 = $300

Therefore, Gianna spent $300 at the gym.
